SMIC to Expand Production Capacity in Beijing; Confirms TI's acquisition of its Chengdu Plant

Chinese fabless chipmaker SMIC (Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation) will steadily expand the production capacity of its plant located in Beijing, the Xinhua News reported on November 3. Further details of the plan, however, were not yet disclosed. Of the company's total capital expenditure, US$750 million to US$800 million of which will be used for production capacity expansion, according to the same source. SMIC stated the company's capital expenditure for 2011 will remain at the same level as for 2010. In addition, SMIC confirmed that its 8-inch wafer fab situated at Chengdu and owned by the Chengdu municipal government has been sold to TI and its management business at this fab has been officially terminated.
